I am a self-confessed night owl. I hate mornings, and I know for a fact I’ll never be a morning person. It’s probably best not to expect too much of me before I’ve had my 2 cups of morning coffee! But I have trained myself to be an organised morning person by following the tips below:
Looking back, I think I actually spent the whole first half of my 20s surviving on 4-5 hours sleep a night and racing around to everything with just minutes to spare. Now I’m in my 30s (and a mother!) I realised I really needed to get my act together and be more organised.
I made a few changes to my daily habits and disciplined myself enough to stick to them consistently. I’ll share them with you now!
How to have an organised morning:
1. Go To Bed!
I know it seems odd to start off this list with something that happens the night before, but this is really really important! Your body needs sleep, and if you’re not getting enough then it will have a knock-on effect in a lot of other areas of your life. Ideally, I need 9 hours but I can manage on about 8. I’m up at
Calculate how much sleep you really need, and make sure you’re in bed on time so that you can fit those hours in.
2. No Snoozing
Stop hitting that snooze button! Easier said than done, I know. I was guilty of this for years, and it’s never worked out well for me. I’ve never woken up from my ‘snooze session’ feeling more refreshed, but it was still a hard habit to break. Once you’ve nailed tip number 1, then this will become easier.
3. Review Your Tasks
Have a think about what you’re going to be doing for the day. Are you going to work? Out on a trip? Staying in and tackling some chores? Whatever it is, try to reflect on what your day will involve and get yourself psyched up to get it done!
4. Put Some Music On
Or a podcast, or an audiobook, or the radio. Whatever floats your boat and gets you motivated for the day. To be honest, I just like the background noise but I’ve found a few really good podcasts that I like to listen to which keep me amused!
5. Get Everything Ready The Night Before
This is one of the big ones! It will make a massive difference to your morning, and it’s something which I have done for years.
- Choose your outfit for the next day (make sure you check the weather forecast, this is England after all…)
- Choose your child’s/children’s outfits. Also, get their bag ready for nursery/school.
- Pack anything that you’ll need for the day into a bag, and get it near the front door. E.g. gym kit, dry cleaning, your mum’s Tupperware that you meant to return last week… (Bonus points if you can stick these in your car!)
- Prepare all of your food for the day ahead, and put it in one place. (This is mainly relevant if you’re going to work)
6. Follow a Routine
This takes a bit of time to get into place, but find out what works best for you and try to do it in the same order every day. One thing I do is to go downstairs to make myself a coffee, feed the dog and let him out before I shower. Then I make sure I get myself dressed and made-up first before I get my son dressed and ready to go.
7. Eat Breakfast
I never feel like eating much until I’ve been up for a couple of hours, but if you can fit breakfast in before you head out then it’s always a good start. I usually pack myself something small and easy (like a cereal bar), to tide me over until I get a break later on in the morning to have something more filling.
8. Work Out
If you can fit a workout routine into your morning, then go for it! (There’s no way I can fit this in on a work day, but on other days I find it so much easier to get this done sooner rather than later) Even 10-15 minutes of stretching can do you good, help you to focus and set you up for the day.
9. Put Down Your Phone
Try not to get sucked into checking your social media/emails/the news as soon as you wake up. It’s so tempting to open all the apps and start scrolling, but it’s a surefire way to waste 10-20 minutes without even
